The challenge
The D4 bypass of Bratislava and its connecting expressway sections, more than 42 km, opened in 2021. After the first year, the builder and the concessionaire wanted the cameras to detect traffic incidents by themselves.
The setup
A project study set out the options, and AI from several vendors was tested for accurate output at a sensible cost. The best fit was Genetec Security Center with CANEX’s deep-learning module built in, trained on traffic incidents.
The analysis needs a stable picture in poor light and weather, and a stream of its own from each camera. Hanwha Vision’s Wisenet cameras gave the best results: 26 XNP-6400RW, with a wiper that starts when it detects rain on the lens, and 50 XNO-6080R.
Operators at the concessionaire’s control centre receive the incident alerts and handle them by their procedures. Traffic events are also shared in the SCADA system.
